MARITIME (CONVENTIONS)
ACT
NO. 39 OF 2017

An Act to provide for the application in Vanuatu of certain international maritime conventions and for related purposes.

Be it enacted by the President and Parliament as follows-

  1. Scheduled Conventions

(1) The provisions of the Conventions listed in the Schedule and any regulation, guideline or rules made from such Conventions have the force of law in Vanuatu.

(2) If a provision of any of the Conventions conflicts with the provision of any other Act, the provision of the Convention prevails.

  1. Repeal

The Maritime (Conventions) Act [CAP 155] is repealed.

  1. Commencement

This Act is taken to have commenced on the 25th of November 1982.

SCHEDULE


(a) International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea, 1974; and

(b) Protocol of 1978, relating to the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea; and

(c) International Convention on Load Lines, 1966; and

(d) International Convention for the Prevention of Pollutions from Ships, 1973 (MARPOL 73); and

(e) Protocol of 1978 Relating to the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships, 1973; and

(f) Convention on the International Regulations for Prevention Collisions at Sea, 1972, as amended (COLREG 1972); and

(g) International Convention on Tonnage Measurement of Ships, 1969 (Tonnage 69); and

(h) Athens Conventions Relating to the Carriage of Passengers and their Luggage by Sea, 1974 (PAL 74); and

(i) Protocol to the Athens Convention Relating to the Carriage of Passengers and their Luggage by Sea, 1974; and

(j) Convention on Facilitation of International Maritime Traffic, 1965 (FAL 1965); and

(k) Protocol of 1976 to the International Convention on Civil Liability for Oil Pollution Damage, 1969; and

(l) International Convention on Standards of Training Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers, 1978 (STCW 1978).
