DECLARATION OF RESERVED OCCUPATIONS


Published Gazette No. 25 of 1997


[The Minister for the time being responsible for Labour Relations declares] the occupations of:


1.Typist

2.Clerical Supervisor

3.Receptionist

4.Hotel Receptionist

5.Waiter/Waitress/Bartender

6.House maid/Domestic Worker

7.Street Vendor

8.Dock Worker

9.Freight Handler

10.Earth Moving and related Machinery operators

11.Driver

12.Bus Driver

13.Lorry and Van Driver

14.Boatswain

15.Able Seaman/Ordinary seaman

16.Carpenter

17.Joiner


as reserved occupations to be effective from the date hereof.


Further particulars on the above reserved occupations are provided in the schedule, annexed hereto.


SCHEDULE


Declaration of Reserved Occupations
Part 3 Section 9 of the Labour (Work Permits) Act [Cap. 187]


TYPIST Transcribes in typewritten from letters, reports, documents, accounts and other material from written or printed, sources, Types letters, Memorandum and similar matter from writer drafts; types on forms, bills, invoices, insurance policies or other documents and cut stencils, checks typewritten work for corrections. May perform limited clerk work.


CLERICAL SUPERVISORS Organise and supervise the daily activities in offices or special office departments of public or private establishments, including allocating work to be performed controlling and examining work done.


RECEPTIIONISTS Receive people coming into an establishment ascertains their wants and directs them accordingly; greets visitors, callers, supplies information or announces arrivals and directs visitor to person called upon; deals with telephone calls requesting information on appointments. May perform limited clerical duties.


HOTEL RECEPTIONIST Receives guest at hotels and similar establishments and performs a variety of services for them on arrival, departure and during their stay.


WAITER/WAITRESS
BAR TENDER Workers in this group serve food and beverages in commercially operated dining and dining and drinking places. Clubs, bars, restaurants, institutions and canteens etc.


HOUSEMAID/DOMESTIC
WORKER Workers in this group provide personal and housekeeping services in private homes, hotels, aboard ships public conveyances and other places.


STREET VENDOR Workers in this group sell goods such as fruits, vegetables, garden food, cooked food, clothes etc from door to door or street or public stand.


DOCK WORKERS AND
FREIGHT HANDLERS Perform freight handling tasks, such as loading and unloading and aircraft cargoes.


EARTH MOVING AND
RELATED MACHINERY
OPERATORS Workers in this unit group operate machine to excavate, grade, level and compact earth and similar materials, mix concrete and clay road surfaces of asphalt and concrete.


DRIVER Drives motor car or three-wheeled motorised vehicle to transport passengers on demand at a charge based on a fixed tariff.


BUS DRIVER Drives motor-bus to transport local or long distance passengers.


LORRY AND VAN DRIVER Drives vehicle, such as heavy truck, light lorry or delivery van to transport a freight or cargoes over short or long distance. May assist with or perform loading and unloading tasks.


BOATSWAIN Supervises deck ratings engaged on clearing and maintenance work on board ships (except engine room) such as inspection of life-saving equipment, cargo – handling supervision and supervises crewmen on maintenance work etc on local inter-island vessels.


ABLS SEAMAN/ORDINARY
SEAMAN Serves as senior or ordinary deck-hand on local sea going vessels. May assist in slowing and discharging of cargo.


CARPENTERS AND
JOINERS Workers in this group provide, shape, assemble, erect, maintain and various types of wooden structures and fittings.
