Enacted by the Parliament of Nauru as follows:

1 Short title

This Act may be cited as the District Court (Amendment) Act 2019.

2 Commencement

This Act commences upon certification by the Speaker.

3 Amendment of the District Court Act 2018

The District Court Act 2018 is amended by the provisions of this Act.

4 Amendment of Section 6

Section 6(2) is deleted and substituted as follows:

‘(2) The lay magistrates shall have jurisdiction to hear and determine:

(a) traffic offences contained under the Motor Traffic (Traffic Infringement Notices) Regulations 2018;

(b) bail applications for offences for which the maximum term of imprisonment is 12 months;

(c) matters for which jurisdiction is vested in the District Court under Section 14(g) of the Act; and

(d) such other matters which the Chief Justice may from time to time assign or vest to the lay magistrates.’
